Now, Sarawak Dayaks want to organise their own rally

KUCHING: The Umno Malays’ calls of “hidup Melayu” during their “red shirts” rally on Wednesday have spurred Sarawak Dayaks to organise their rally to protest against the land-grabbing, the state government’s refusal to recognise their “pemakai menua” (territorial domain) and “pulau galau” (forest reserve) as native customary right (NCR) land, as well as against the construction of mega dams.

The Dayaks were encouraged by the “success” of the “red shirt” rally which had not only been sanctioned by the Umno leadership and the police, but was also attended by Umno leaders, members and members of Malay NGOs.

The rally had been held in response to the Bersih 4.0 recently, which called for Prime Minister Najib Razak to step down, for a fair and clean election, good governance and religious freedom, and called on the Malays to “protect” Malay rights and honour.

When a question was posed on Facebook whether the Dayaks should organise their own rally to emulate Umno’s rally, the responses and reactions from individuals and Dayak NGOs were surprisingly overwhelming.

However, not of all them agreed to use the “red shirts”.

One FB user, Abel R Bana wanted the rally to use “black shirts” to signify that the Dayaks are in a period of mourning and their anger and remorse for allowing themselves to be bullied, marginalised and to be taken for granted.

Another FB user Ben Diomedes Ak Ujai agreed that the shirts should be black which is a sign of mourning for the “death” of their NCR land.

Several users commented that the shirts should be green to signify the greenness of the “pemakai menua” and “pulau galau”, which have been supporting the needs and the livelihood of the Dayaks.

There were others who wanted the rally participants to dress in their traditional costumes.

Encouraged by the positive comments on the idea of organising a protest, Peter John Jaban, the organiser of “Sarawak4Sarawakians” rally on July 22, said that he would like to organise the rally.

“I will call a meeting soon to discuss the possibility of having the rally and will contact Dayak NGOs to help me organise it.

“I hope it will be the biggest ever rally to be organised by the Dayaks, in order to show our displeasure at the state government’s refusal to recognise our pulau galau and pemakai menua,” he said in an interview.

The rally, he said, should be held before the state election.

He hoped that all Dayaks who want to protect their NCR land, be they members of the four component parties of the State BN or members of the opposition, to take part in the rally to express Dayak solidarity.

“We must show the state government that we are united in protecting our NCR land, which is the most valuable asset of the Dayaks,” said Peter.

Commenting on the same issue, the chairman of Gerakan Anak Sarawak (Gasak) Abun Sui Anyit agreed with the proposal made by state Land Development Minister James Masing that the Majlis Adat Istiadat (MAI) should be given the sole authority on the issue of “pemakai menua” and “pulau galau”.

“The proposal is a good thing, but the best is still the amendment to the Sarawak Land Code (Cap 81). It will even be a plus if the State Constitution is amended in order to safeguard our Adat (custom) on pemakai menua and pulau galau,” said Abun, who is a lawyer specialising in NCR land cases.

He said that to strengthen MAI per se would not guarantee the safeguard of the Dayak Adat on pemakai menua and pulau galau, because MAI might be abused by those in power, either by the current BN government or future non-BN government.

“The safest way is still the amendments to the Land Code to include pemakai menua and pulau galau as NCR interpretation.

“Also if MAI is put under certain department or ministry it will still be subject to the ‘head’ or minister, or even the chief minister of the government of the day.

“Therefore, if the current government is concerned about the natives’ rights over pulau galau and pemakai menua, this is the best time for them to show it,” he said.

Former law minister blames Umno for willingly turning Malays into “violent rogues” for their own political ends as evidenced during the Red Shirts rally.

PETALING JAYA: The racist rants and violent behaviour of Red Shirts rally goers has alarmed former law minister Zaid Ibrahim who has blamed Umno for willingly encouraging Malays to compromise their morals so leaders like them can achieve their political goals.

Commenting on some of the comments that have been made in the media by Malay leaders about the rally, Zaid said he was “embarrassed by their antics”.

He mentioned their explanation that the phrase “Cina Babi” was not a racial slur and remarked, “I am sure if we were to substitute ‘Cina’ with the name of the Umno President, all hell will break loose.”

He said this showed those in Umno as well as Red Shirt Malays were no longer capable of being normal nor had they any idea what being “fair-minded” meant. “They believe they can say and do things that others are not allowed to.”

He said there was a big difference between Bersih 4’s Yellow Shirts and Wednesday’s Red Shirts and said, “…the Yellows had grievances which many people consider to be legitimate. They protested the conduct of the Government by gathering in remarkable numbers for two days, and they did so peacefully.”

The “Reds”, on the other hand, he said, seemed intent on demanding “a piece of Petaling Street” while “proving” Prime Minister Najib Razak had support. “Unfortunately, they also showed that his supporters are made up mainly of foul-mouthed racists.”

He regretted that Umno was willing to turn Malays into “violent rogues” and added, “They are willing to destroy the character and personality of the Malay community just for their political ends.”

He also condemned as “shameful and pathetic” the silence from religious clerics and remarked, “It seems the moral degradation of Malays has spread to the Islamic clergy as well, thanks to Umno.”

“I am sure these UMNO leaders are capable of orchestrating far more brutal acts of misconduct, violence, immorality, venality and shame,” he said, adding that the only voices of reason were those of former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former minister Rafidah Aziz.

Asking what sacked deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and sacked minister Shafie Apdal was doing to save the Malay race from further destruction, after being outspoken about 1Malaysia Development Berhad, he said, “These leaders should start a new movement; it need not be a political one, so long as it speaks for Malays and tells them what is good for them.

“It’s alarming to see how the Red Shirt Malays can’t tell the difference between what’s good for them and what’s good for Najib.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his deputy, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, were overwhelmed by the support shown for the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu or People’s United Rally here today, Umno leader Tan Sri Annuar Musa has said.

Speaking towards the end of the rally at Padang Merbok, the Umno Supreme Council member claimed that no less than 250,000 people converged on the city to participate in the event, ostensibly to show support for the country’s current leadership.

“I just got a call from PM who sent his regards to those who attended. PM is in Sabah, celebrating Malaysia Day, and also the DPM who said they were shocked and touched with a gathering as big and as peaceful as this,” Annuar said.

“This rally is not only the voices of the 250,000 here. Let this be a reminder to all citizens, this country has a leader... anyone who threatens that, we will rise and fight to the end,” he added.

Annuar, who is also Ketereh MP and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairman, also read out a 14-point resolution which the rally organisers claim has been agreed to by political parties and NGOs aligned to their cause.

This includes defending parliamentary democracy, instilling respect, love and unity among Malaysians, uniting the people to defend the country’s stability, rejecting DAP’s alleged chauvinist racism, rejecting foreign interference in the country’s affairs, rejecting Bersih 4 and similar rallies, and rejecting any speech that insults Islam.

The resolution also called on the public to support the government in managing the current economic slump, unite to uphold the position of the Malays and Bumiputeras and other races, to defend the duly elected government, uphold the Rukun Negara, reject political lies levied at the government, reject attempts to “bully” a democratically elected government, and call for the return of the Internal Security Act (ISA).

“History has proven that we are willing to work with others on one condition, that our position as Malays is not questioned, and that our rights are not disturbed,” Annuar said.

“It doesn’t end at Padang Merbok, but it is just the beginning of the rise of our race,” he added. 

Yes, it will END for Najib and then for Umno.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Amid continued silence from the actual organiser of the highly-touted “red shirt” rally planned for September 16, an Umno grassroots leader said today the demonstration was to serve as a lesson to the ethnic Chinese who purportedly prevailed at last month’s Bersih 4 not to be rude to the country’s dominant Malays.

Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos said Malay non-government organisations were compelled to rise now due to multiple acts during the Bersih 4 rally by the large Chinese turnout whom he accused of having “insulted the Malay leaders” after they were “brainwashed by DAP”.

“The NGOs are thankful to Bersih which was banned. That rally helped the uprising of the Malay NGOs because of the insulting messages.

“Because of the rudeness of Bersih 4, that is why we are gathering at Bukit Bintang to give a clear message to the DAP Chinese not to be impudent to the Malay race,” he told a news conference at a landmark of Malay culture, the Kelab Sultan Sulaiman here.

Jamal added that the participants in the Bersih 4 rally, which ran two days from August 29 to 30, had been indoctrinated to turn against Malays by federal opposition parties.

He singled out the predominantly Chinese DAP as the main factor, claiming that “90 per cent of those who were turned up for the Bersih 4 rally were Chinese DAP, which shows it was a rally for them”.

“The other 10 per cent of other races is only a small amount whose thoughts have been brainwashed by the opposition,” he said.

The organiser of the “red” September 16 rally is supposedly a Malay martial arts organisation called Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan Malaysia (Pesaka), led by Senator Tan Sri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, according to information on its website.

According to Jamal, Pesaka has invited over 750 Malay NGOs to join in the rally on Malaysia Day.

He added that the organiser has also sent out invitations to all Umno divisions and other political parties including PAS, and claimed over 30,000 have pledged to attend to date.

“We had meeting with 750 NGO. We got agreement from all these Malay NGOs to join the rally organised by Pesaka.

“We give our full support to PESAKA for the rally on September 16 at Padang Merbok. We are expecting around 30,000 people only from NGO to attend the rally,” Jamal said, adding that his Sungai Besar Umno division is mobilising 3,000 members for the rally.

The September 16 rally had raised a storm after word of it spread on social media networks in recent days, but no one had owned up as its organiser till now.

The rally has received unofficial support from some government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

It is ostensibly in reaction to the Bersih 4 protest on August 29 and 30, and is touted to see a turnout of 300,000 supporters. 

What excuse do these Malays want to use to threaten the Chinese, always on the lookout for such small insignificant excuse to show their Malay might. This LAND does not belong to them - ALL LAND belong to GOD1 we are just sojourners here with a short lifespan. WHY act so BIG!!! Best not let God judge for such vile outlandish behaviour of wanting to shed blood (Chinese or whoever)!

DAP parliamentarians have expressed disagreement with Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia that there are no provisions in the standing orders that allow MPs to table a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"Absolutely not," said Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua.

"Which Parliament in the world does not allow for a motion of no confidence?" he asked.

Pua pointed out how the prime minister is selected based on the confidence of the majority of MPs in the House.

"And that majority needs to be expressed, and should such a majority change or shift to someone else, there must naturally be a process in Parliament to allow for that change to take place," he said.

"We have the supreme legislative body, surely we can choose our own prime minister," he added.

His party colleague Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim also questioned Pandikar's argument.

"How can it be (that there are no provisions)?

"This is a Westminster practice, so the speaker should consider this, because this is a Westminster Parliament. Even if there is no specific provision, there is a convention. So yes, I don't agree," he said.

Pandikar yesterday said that there were no provisions in the standing orders which mentioned an MP could table a motion of no confidence against the prime minister.

"There are no such provisions. Can I in the name of democracy, western democracy, make such standing orders? It looks stupid," he had said.

On another matter, Pua appeared pessimistic about the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) resuming its hearing into 1MDB.

"If it (PAC hearings) resumes... What makes you think it will resume?" he said.

Asked to elaborate, Pua said there had been no commitment from the speaker or the executive as to when the PAC chairperson would be appointed.

"All they said is let's wait for the coming parliamentary session before such an appointment is made.

"Is it going to be the first day of the session or the last day of the session until it's the holiday season?

"All we know is they are playing the delaying tactic to buy as much time as possible for the prime minister and hope the prime minister will be able to cover up the whole (issue) on 1MDB," he alleged.

The progress of the PAC in probing the allegations surrounding MDB hit a brick wall when its former chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed was made a deputy minister and had to step down from the committee.

Four of the eight BN MPs in the PAC were appointed into Najib's cabinet during the last controversial cabinet shuffle.

Apart from Nur Jazlan, the other three appointed were Wilfred Madius Tangau, Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The appointments had been criticised as an attempt by Najib to derail the 1MDB investigations. - M'kini

There seems to be no shortage of people ready to defend him and his administration.      

The latest to step up to bat is none other than the former head of the Malaysian chapter of Transparency International, Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim who has criticised the NGO's international president for targeting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over his RM2.6 billion scandal.

In particular, Abdul Aziz, who is also on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) advisory board, took issue with TI president José Ugaz's statement that Malaysia is facing a crisis of corruption. 

"I think this statement is ill-advised and ill-informed. 

"It is just an opinion which is based on unconfirmed reports," Abdul Aziz told journalists at the 16th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) in Putrajaya today. 

International anti-graft figures has been convening in Putrajaya since yesterday for the high-profile three-day conference, where Ugaz delivered the scathing speech on the RM 2.6 billion “donation” scandal during its opening ceremony.

Abdul Aziz insisted that Ugaz's view was only one side of the story. 

"It was a one-sided statement. He should have taken the trouble to give a balanced view by asking people who are informed about this," he added. 

Well, Abdul Aziz, if Ugaz is ill-informed then who is informed? The people want to know. 

Malaysians have seen how those who had been tasked with investigating the matter and asking for answers were then sacked, arrested or transferred. 

These were informed people and look what happened to them. 

Look what happened to the Public Accounts Committee and the high-powered task force formed to investigate the donation allegations. 

The PAC was effectively paralysed due to the appointment of some of its members to ministerial positions, and the task force was then dissolved.

So what does this say about Abdul Aziz’s commitment to transparency?

Shouldn’t he be supporting Ugaz’s statement? 

These are blatant obstructions of the investigations, and Abdul Aziz should know this. 

According to a report by The Malaysian Insider published a day after his defence of Putrajaya, Abdul Aziz said there has apparently been some meddling in the investigations. 

"Yes, apparently there has been interference and I think it's unfortunate.” 

"The timing is all wrong. It was ill-advised on the part of government to have made all these changes while investigations were in progress," he said.

How ironic and confusing. 

Abdul Aziz also sounded foolish by saying Ugaz, the head of an international body is ill-advised and ill-informed.

Ugaz’s speech is not just an opinion based on an unconfirmed report. 

His observations were based on events which transpired following theWall Street Journal report, and even the public are aware and have been raising these very questions. 

If the report about the “donation” is “unconfirmed”, then the government should answer the allegations by suing the Wall Street Journal.

That would be a slap in the face to the detractors, schemers and even Ugaz.

It is also highly ironic for Abdul Aziz to talk about making opinions based on unconfirmed reports in the wake of his own sweeping statements, that Bersih 4 was funded and organised by the Chinese community, when he did not have any proof whatsoever. 

It is hard to believe this very man had once championed transparency and good governance. 

Surely, Abdul Aziz will not be remembered fondly for his recent antics. 

Looks like just as the others who defended Najib got rewards, so Abdul Aziz is likely to have been paid handsomely for going against his integrity, beliefs!!! Where are all the upright, well-meaning, fair, just, honourable men???

Police have offered a financial reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest of those who stepped on a picture of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, at the Bersih 4 rally recently. Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said the police viewed the act seriously because it created a tense atmosphere which evoked public disorder. "The police have to take action in accordance with the law to ensure such things do not trigger a reaction from any party which will ultimately affect public safety," he said in a statement yesterday. 

He did not specify the amount offered. Accordingly, the police urged anyone with information on those involved in the incident to come forward and help with the investigation. – Bernama, September 5, 2015.
