The leaders said the fact that the state’s Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah was quoted openly admitting the state government’s preparation for hudud is proof that the Islamist party had deceived the public when it said the Bill was only meant to empower the Shariah Courts.

“It just shows that PAS is a party that cannot be trusted,” MCA publicity spokesman Datuk Seri Li Tian Ker told Malay Mail.

“It simply reveals that they are just politicians that operates in camouflage and masks… and the Bill was all just political play.

“It’s not a credible party. They seemed to have no qualms about giving misleading statements and not speaking the truth,” Ti added.

Malay daily Sinar Harian ran a report on January 3 quoting Mohd Amar as saying that the Kelantan PAS government will study ways of adopting Qatar’s implementation of hudud, including amputation, whipping and stoning for some offences.

Just last week, Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yaakob was quoted by the same daily saying the state government is still committed to implement hudud, during an event called Hududullah Day in Kota Baru meant to promote the Islamic penal law.

Leaders from both PAS and rival Umno from ruling coalition BN had repeatedly insisted last year that Hadi’s Bill that seeks to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, also known as Act 355, is not a backdoor to implement hudud, even as legal experts and academic have argued otherwise.

MIC youth chief Datuk Sivarrajh Chandran said leaders from BN component parties were also made to understand that Hadi’s Bill was only limited to proposals to increase the Shariah courts’ sentencing limits to 30 years’ jail, RM100,000 fine and 100 lashes, among others.

Taking cue from Umno, which had at various instants explicitly voiced its backing for the proposed amendments, MIC and MCA eventually agreed to the idea after several internal briefings were held to convince them that changes to Act 355 would not pave way for hudud, Sivarrajh noted.

“As far as I know RUU355 is just an amendment to increase the punishment and penalties for existence punishable offences under Shariah law,” the MIC leader said in a text response to Malay Mail, using the Malay initials for the Bill.

“That is what we were briefed about during the RUU355 fiasco during our BN Youth council meeting. This is new and contradicts what we have been told.

“As we should all know Malaysia is a multiracial country and we need world economies to be optimistic about our country for them to invest and to be in the ecosystem,” the MIC leader added.

Some experts believed the prolonged controversy that built around Hadi’s Bill gave PAS significant political mileage as the party succeeded in portraying minor opposition against its plan to impose hudud as an attack against Islam, although a large number of progressive Muslims have also spoken out against it.

This means it would be in the interest of PAS to continue playing up the hudud polemic in the build up towards the 14th general election, which pundits predict will be called in the first half of this year.

Gerakan youth chief Tan Keng Liang said PAS’ incongruous position on hudud should send a clear warning to voters that the Islamists were not an outfit to be trusted.

“This is something for the voters to reflect on GE14,” the senator told Malay Mail in a text response.

PAS did not respond to Malay Mail’s request for comments.

Kelantan had already passed amendments to a Shariah enactment that would allow hudud punishments in 2016, but the state government faces legal hindrance to enforce the law since criminal punishments fall under federal laws.

Last year the state became the first to introduce public caning as punishment for minor Shariah offences amid protest from rights groups, including the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia, which called the penalty degrading and inhumane.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said Dr Mahathir Mohamad crossed the line by labelling him as an infidel and traitor to Muslims, reported Berita Harian.

Hadi said the Pakatan Harapan chairman's move to resort to personal attacks to bring other leaders down was an act of desperation.

“It’s going too far (labelling Hadi as an infidel and traitor). But let him repent. He’s an old man anyway.  

“He has to seclude himself and rethink what he has said. He has to think about it and do a lot of reading.

"Don’t read only medical books. He has to read Islamic books as well.

“Hopefully, he will feel remorse. I have forgiven him. Between him and God, he has to repent,” the Islamist party's president was quoted as saying in Pengkalan Berangan, Marang, yesterday.

Dr Mahathir yesterday continued to blame Hadi for supporting Prime Minister Najib Razak.

The former prime minister said Hadi had called Umno a party of infidels, but was now working with the Malay party, which made Hadi, too, an infidel.

Hadi had, in the past, called on PAS members to oppose Umno, saying they would become martyrs if they died fighting the party of infidels.

Dr Mahathir said the speech by the PAS president, known as the Amanat Hadi, had inspired the Memali tragedy in 1985 when police laid siege on religious extremists, resulting in 14 dead, including the group’s leader, Ibrahim Libya, and four policemen.

When asked about Dr Mahathir’s accusation that Hadi had played a role in the Memali incident, Hadi said he had written a book on it, and asked that people refer to it. – January 4, 2018.

Hadi should sue Dr. M. for libel or he is an infidel as claimed. After all he sued Sarawak Report  Clare Rewcastle Brown for libel. One also wonders if he has received funds from Najib? Well PAS needs a lot of money for GE and if it wants to benefit BN then it might as well get paid paid for it, as Pas is not a rich party.

He says people will become aware that abolishing tolls is possible and that all this while Putrajaya has just been making excuses against doing it.

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya’s decision to abolish toll charges at Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau won’t affect Pakatan Harapan’s chances of retaining the Shah Alam seat.

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad told FMT getting rid of the two tolls would leave people wanting more.

“It’s going to set the tone for 2018 and people will see this as the beginning of change.

“When you abolish the tolls, everyone feels the happiness and freedom that they will feel when they are free of Barisan Nasional (BN),” he said.

The decision to abolish both tolls was announced in October by Prime Minister Najib Razak when he tabled the 2018 Budget.

Khalid said the abolition of the two tolls just went to show that the federal government had been giving lame excuses all this while whenever the opposition asked for tolls to be abolished.

“It shows the people that it can be done if the government leaders want to put their minds to it.”

He claimed the fact that toll rates had been going up as time went on did not make any sense as toll rates were supposed to be at their most expensive early on.

“The normal practice of toll collection is that it is high in the beginning so that you can get your return on investment (ROI). After you get your ROI, it’s supposed to go down as all that’s left is to pay for maintenance.

“It goes down to the point where you can even just charge maintenance by including it in the road tax of vehicles. But in Malaysia, the toll charges just keep going up and up and this doesn’t make any sense.”

Last month, the New Straits Times quoted Shah Alam Umno division chief Azhari Shaari as saying suggestions to stop toll collections had been brought up by BN over the past 10 years and its efforts peaked in 2014.

So true, the people are fed up with tolls, GST, excesses of BN govt. Let the PH take over the Federal govt. and abolish tolls, GST, and other excesses. This can be done as long as corruption is kept at bay. The BN says they need 40 billion to run the country. But the only need 30% of this amount as the rest goes to their excesses (projects and purchases) - projects that require 2.5 times more than the original cost, Those who do these projects will make great profits already as these projects are not OPEN TENDER, so to increase it just to enrich the elite at the rakyat's expense.  So if we do the maths  tolls and GST can be abolished!

ABDUL Hadi Awang is an infidel and a traitor to Muslims, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a stinging attack against the PAS president.

The former prime minister today continued to blame Hadi for supporting Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Dr Mahathir, who is now Pakatan Harapan chairman, said Hadi had called Umno a party of infidels but was now working with Umno, and this made Hadi an infidel, too.

"The person abusing Islam is Hadi. He said the government is an infidel government; he said that if you die fighting the government, you will gain.

""Najib is a kafir, according to PAS. But you see, he (Hadi) is going to help this kafir. (And) He (Hadi) has said that if you work with kafir, you become kafir," Dr Mahathir said at his office in Putrajaya.

He said Hadi was leading his party to contest in the next general election despite knowing full well that it would lose, because Hadi wished to split votes for the opposition to "help Najib win".

"Hadi knows very well that most of the seats will be lost, but he would be helping Najib win by splitting the opposition vote. That is his intention, and that is not very Islamic."

"In Malay we call (such a person) 'pengkhianat' (traitor) because that is what he is. I mean, he is going to go in and contest when he knows very well he is going to lose; but he knows the effect of him contesting," Dr Mahathir said.

He said although Hadi might stand to "win a few seats", PAS had no chance of winning if it were to contest on its own in the general election.

"He (Hadi) may win a few seats, (but) you know that when PAS contested as PAS, without joining any coalition, they never won more than 11 seats. Once they won only one seat, on their own.

"They only won when they joined DAP, with DAP they won 21 and then 27 seats, so now they are going to go it alone, and alone they are going to lose. Of the 130 or one million seats they are going to contest, they will lose all, but they will be helping their good friend, formerly the kafir from Umno," he said.
