Chronic disease linked to the use of everyday plastic products

Chronic disease linked to the use of everyday plastic products

Facebook
chronic-disease-linked-to-plasticA new study has added to the mounting pile of evidence that phthalates in plastic food packaging can cause chronic disease. Researchers from the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and the University of Adelaide have further substantiated these findings.
In this recent study, about 1,500 male participants were assessed for phthalates in their systems. Urine samples revealed that a staggering 99.6 percent of the subjects had phthalates in their bodies at significant levels.

Phthalates in plastic food packaging linked with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure

Even just traces of phthalates can cause a number of different health problems. The researchers suspect these phthalates come from exposure to plastic food packaging, which is used in a high percentage of the processed food items on store shelves today.
Some of the top forms of illness and chronic disease linked with phthalates in plastic food packaging include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. The presence of phthalates is strongly linked with eating foods that have been packaged and stored in plastic bottles and containers.
Sadly, the typical Western diet is still heavy based on processed foods that are stored in plastic food packaging. Previous studies have already shown a link between prepackaged foods, high phthalate levels and chronic disease.

Phthalates impede vitamin D synthesis, which can pave the way for chronic disease

In addition to processed and packaged foods on store shelves, phthalates have also been found in fast foods. They are used in the processing and sale of personal care products such as cosmetics, lotions and medical tubes. Phthalates have been linked with hormone disruption as well as blockage of vitamin D synthesis, which is crucial to immune system health.
A 2016 study assessing U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data and published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that persons exposed to phthalates in large amounts tended to have lower levels of vitamin D in their bloodstreams than those with less exposure. Phthalates, EDCs and BPAs seem to alter vitamin D in negative ways.
So what are the alternatives? Packaging design experts from Skipping Rocks Lab out of London in the UK has created what they call “edible water balls,” or consumable plastic packaging that eliminates the need for storing and packaging drinking water in plastic bottles. A team of German experts has created biodegradable, leaf-derived plates and cutlery as a substitute for plastic versions.  But, these ideas ignore a simple truth …

Avoid food stored in plastic food packaging whenever possible

Consumers can push for the design and use of non-plastic, biodegradable packaging alternatives with their favorite food manufacturers. But, even better, we ought to focus on non-processed food choices – as much as possible.
In other words, we simply have to change our buying habits.  This includes buying local and organic vegetables, fruits and 100% grass-fed meats, plus more cooking at home to avoid ‘packaged foods’ altogether.  Of course, if we need to carry our food with us, we can invest in a stainless steel or glass container – when needed,
When storing or carrying water for any length of time, use a glass jar or bottle – instead of plastic.  These are just a few simple suggestions to help you live a ‘plastic-free’ life.  To your health!

Saint’s Statue Defaced amid Confederate Monuments Debate

Saint’s Statue Defaced amid Confederate Monuments Debate

Saint’s Statue Defaced amid Confederate Monuments Debate

As the battle over Confederate monuments suggest, one person’s saint is another person’s sinner.
And over the weekend that controversy reached beyond the South to California, where a statue of a Catholic saint, Rev. Junipero Serra, was vandalized in Los Angeles.
Images appeared on social media showing the word “murder” smeared in white paint on a statue of the 18th-century Franciscan priest who led the Catholic Church’s missionary efforts among Native Americans on the West Coast.
Traces of red paint and a swastika were also found on the statue, which sits in a park across from Mission San Fernando in the Mission Hills section of Los Angeles.
Serra, who is credited with spreading the Catholic faith across what is now California, was canonized by Pope Francis on his 2015 trip to the U.S.
But critics say the priest was part of an imperial conquest that beat and enslaved Native Americans, raped their women, and destroyed their culture by forcing them to abandon their traditional language, diet, dress and other customs and rites.
“I think the statue should come down from this park, and then put some appreciation to the Native people that live here,” Cristian Ramirez, a local man who came to see the vandalized statue, told CBS Los Angeles. “We don’t want this violent history to be praised in our community.”
Father Serra was born in Spain in 1713. He came to the Americas in 1749, and in 1769 he founded the first of what would become 21 missions along the California coast.
Native Americans brought into the mission to be evangelized were not allowed to leave the grounds. Many labored for no pay. There is evidence of beatings, imprisonment and other abuse at the hands of the missionaries. By the time Serra died in 1784, he is reputed to have confirmed 5,300 people as Catholics, most of them Native Americans.
Serra’s defenders argue that it’s not fair to judge this 18th-century missionary by 21st-century standards. They believe he was a moderating influence on his fellow Spaniards, and frequently pleaded for more merciful treatment for the Native Americans under their control.
Monuments associated with Serra have been vandalized before. Within days of his elevation to sainthood in 2015, the historic mission in Carmel, Calif. was vandalized and gravestones were toppled. Serra’s remains are buried at the Carmel Mission, which was founded in 1770.
Also in 2015, vandals spread red paint on the door of Mission Santa Cruz.

Blasphemy: Turning a Killer Into a Saint

Pope Francis has decided to do something very controversial in the Catholic Church. He has declared that an alleged murderer should be a saint.
In the state of California, the Spanish missions, during the first part of the encomienda system, reached from south of San Diego to as far north as present Sonoma County, where the most northern Spanish mission was located. Each mission was designed to be 30 miles, or one day’s ride by horseback, from the next one. There were a total of 21 Spanish missions in California. The Spanish never settled the rich valley of California and the mountainous eastern side.
Father Junipero Serra was the founder of the mission system in California. A native of the island of Majorca off of Spain, he was born in 1713. Serra had earned a doctorate and became a university lecturer in Spain before he decided to Christianize the Indians of the New World. After spending 18 years in Mexico, in 1769, seven years before the start of the Revolutionary War in the U.S., he founded the first of the Spanish missions for the California Indians. It was the Mission San Diego de Alcala.
He personally founded a total of nine missions. Later, other Jesuits would found another 12. The missions used the Indians as forced laborers. While the missions were ostensibly there to help the Indians by making them Christians, their language expressed their vile views of the Natives.
The Spanish regarded the Indians as depraved, degraded, savage, superstitious, wild, devil worshipers, and pagans. Indians could no longer pick their spouses; the Spanish overlords decided this. Choice was taken away; attendance at church was mandatory. Also mandatory was the cruel labor and punishment the Spanish meted out.
The Spanish kidnapped Indians by the thousands. They had a paternalistic attitude toward the Indians, making the men work at hard labor to build the missions, grow the crops, make articles for sale, and herd the mission cattle. They made bricks, candles, tiles, saddles, shoes, soap, and other things.

The Indian women were required to do all the housework and cooking. The Spanish did not call the Indians slaves, but the Indians were no longer free. Every mission had a military garrison. If Indians fled the missions, the soldiers from the garrison would hunt them down and kill them or bring them back.
The Spanish have been treated by history as being more enlightened than the later Americans in their treatment of Indians. And there is much to be said in support of this argument. But both systems, Spanish and Anglo, were cruel and deadly. During the three-quarters of a century the Spanish ran the state of California, a third of the California Indians were killed or died. The Indian population went from around 310,000 in 1769 to only 100,000 in 1848. This was a death rate of over 75 percent.
At Mission San Juan, for instance, in 1812 there was a population of 1,981 Indians. But that same year a total of 1,159 Indians died—that’s 59 percent. The Indians died from diseases to which they had no immunity, from brutality, from murder, and from suicide. By 1834 there had been 4,073 baptisms at the mission and 3,125 deaths, a death rate of 77 percent. Life for Indians in the missions was brutal and deadly.
The gold rush happened in California and Oregon in 1848. The emigrants from the eastern part of the U.S. totaled over 100,000 within five years. All the early American governors—Peter Burnett, John McDougall, John Bigler, Neely Johnson, Milton Latham, John Downey, Leland Stanford—were in favor of killing all the Indians in the state. Burnett said, “That a war of extermination will continue to be waged between the races, until the Indian race becomes extinct, must be expected. While we cannot anticipate this result but with painful regret, the inevitable destiny of the race is beyond the power or wisdom of man to avert.”
Within a few years of the discovery of gold in 1848, the Indian population had dropped from 100,000 to only 50,000. By 1900, under the Anglo settlers from the east, the population declined even further to only 15,000—a death rate of more than 95 percent in a century and a half.
More than 5,700 Indians are buried at the Mission San Francisco de Assis, the most northern of the nine missions that Serra founded. Many of the California tribes were killed off or devastated by the actions of the missions. Included in this destruction were Gabrieleno, Ohlone, Kumeyaay, Juaneno, Chumash, Chimariko (completely killed off), Lassik (completely gone), Nongatl, Tubatulabl, Yokuts, and many other California tribes.
Indians who escaped the Spanish missions could be legally hunted down and imprisoned or killed. They were literally prisoners of the missions, which were there to save their souls. Once they were captured by the mission troops and brought under force to live at the mission, their life expectancy was less than 10 years.
The missions justified their existence by saying they taught the Indian men how to be farmers and ranchers, and the Indian women how to be cooks and housekeepers. But since both men and women were kept as prisoners in the missions, later history has looked at them as more like slaves than students. In fact, anyone who would today refer to them as students would be laughed down as a fool. They were slaves in everything but name.

Native Americans do not think Junipero Serra should be canonized because of his treatment of their ancestors. (San Juan Capistrano Historical Society)

Native Americans do not think Junipero Serra should be canonized because of his treatment of their ancestors.
Only God knows how many Indians Serra personally killed, but it was in the hundreds, if not the thousands. He had men garroted, hanged, shot, jailed, and whipped. The Indian women were treated almost as cruelly—they were raped, enslaved and abused. The women were restricted to the houses of the ranchos, and slept in prisons at night.
The first person to expose Serra was the late, great Rupert Costo. A full-blooded Cahuilla Indian, Rupert and his wife Jeanette Henry founded the American Indian Historical Society in 1950. They also wrote numerous books on Indians, founded the first national Indian newspaper (“Wassaja”), and published dozens of books on Indians.
For years he was the leader of the Cahuilla Tribe of Palm Springs. Jeanette and Rupert’s book,Missions of California: A Legacy of Genocide, was the first to expose the inhumane treatment of the Indians by the Spanish missions. It was published in 1987, but did not receive kind reviews in the mainstream press like it did in the Indian press.
Recently an unidentified man vandalized two of the statues in the San Gabriel Mission in California. Both of them depicted Jesus. Monica Rocha wrote an article about it for the Los Angeles Times. He broke the arms and head off one of the statues using a huge rock.
The police officer who took the report, J. A. Leach, said it was disgusting. The San Gabriel police chief, David A. Lawton, said it was tragic and despicable. They obviously have no clue what the missions did to Indians or care about it. San Gabriel was the second mission that Serra called home.
The attack during the third week of January 2015 is similar to the attack on the murderer and first Spanish governor of New Mexico, Juan de Onate. In a massacre at the Pueblo of Acoma in 1598, he massacred 800 people. Then he cut the left foot off all the males over the age of 25. For this the king of Spain had him recalled to Spain and punished him.
After a statue was erected of Onate in El Paso in 2007, Indians cut off the left foot of the statue in protest. When one of the Hispanic leaders in Albuquerque was pushing for a similar statue at the same time, I went to my friend the mayor, Martin Chavez, and told him we would not like such a statue. He went along with it, and shut up the person pushing it.
The person who desecrated the San Gabriel Mission may have been motivated in a similar fashion. Fr. Tony Diaz, the San Gabriel priest, is not sure if the person was Indian or not. It happened about the same time that the Pope visited the U.S. had raised Serra to sainthood.
One of my non-Indian friends said to me recently, “I don’t know how any Indians could become Christians, after the way the Christians treated them.” It tore at my heart.
The genocide of Indians in California and other states is history. But it is a sad and mournful history. The massacre of Indians in California, starting while the Spanish still ruled it, was massive and brutal. California was the leading state for Indian massacres. No one who participated should be worshipped, canonized, raised to sainthood, or praised. This is just blasphemy.

The vandalized Los Angeles statue was restored over the weekend.

More freedom now than Dr M’s era? That’s rubbish

More freedom now than Dr M’s era? That’s rubbish, Zahid told

 | August 22, 2017
Veteran newsmen say press freedom is worse today than it was during former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad's time.
zam-maidin-zahidPETALING JAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is wrong in claiming that press freedom is better now than when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was in power, said two veteran newsmen.
Former Utusan Malaysia group editor-in-chief Zainuddin Maidin said when he was running the daily, then prime minister Mahathir had made time to meet media practitioners at least once a month.
The meetings often centred on discussions of national issues, during which the opinions of journalists were not only listened to, but also respected, he said.
“We also had the freedom to write about opposition leaders. An example was when the late Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat won the post of Kelantan menteri besar.
“We interviewed him and ran the stories three days in a row. The publications were all sold out, although other state leaders started questioning why they weren’t allocated the same amount of space.
“But for me, I wanted to make Utusan a daily that represented the voice of the people, instead of the way it is now, which is Umno’s mouthpiece,” he told FMT.
Mahathir did not give him a hard time for running the stories on Nik Aziz, neither did he stop Utusan from reporting on Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah when the latter went against him in the 1987 Umno party elections, said Zainuddin.
He said unlike today’s Utusan, the opposition leaders were also allowed to have their views aired in the Malay daily, in line with his goal to make Utusan bi-partisan.
“That’s why Utusan had high circulation then. Mahathir, although some said he had controlled the media, never did so.”
Zainuddin, who later became information minister, said present Umno ministers such as Zahid should not talk about matters they were not well informed about.
“Mahathir didn’t disturb the daily tasks of the journalists then. He didn’t make phone calls telling us what we can and cannot do.
“So Zahid doesn’t know what he is talking about.”
Zahid, who is also the home minister, said yesterday that a former prime minister had, during his tenure, set and controlled the agenda of national news agencies.
This is unlike the prime ministers who came after him, who allowed these agencies the freedom to report as they wanted, said Zahid.
Although he did not name anyone, it was believed that he was referring to Mahathir, the longest-serving prime minister who led the country for more than 22 years.

We are being sued by Najib, the first time a sitting prime minister has sued a media organisation, says Gan.
Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan, when contacted, expressed the same view.
He said from the experiences of those working in the news portal, press freedom is worse today than it was during Mahathir’s time.
“While we were raided in 2003, and 19 of our computers were seized at the tail end of Mahathir’s era, no charges were laid against us.
“However, we were raided a number of times in recent years, and charges have been filed against me and Malaysiakini CEO Premesh Chandran.
“In addition, we are being sued by Najib Razak, the first time a sitting prime minister has sued a media organisation,” said Gan.

If Assad Is “Killing His Own People” Why Are They Rushing Back To Him?

If Assad Is “Killing His Own People” Why Are They Rushing Back To Him?

As the mainstream corporate press attempts to guilt Westerners over making Syrian refugees return home, Western outlets are, in fact, deconstructing their own propaganda narrative for all to see.
For instance, according to the International Organization for Migration, more than 600,000 Syrians have returned home to Syria since the beginning of 2017, more than the number of returning refugees in the entire year of 2016.
IOM reports that the majority of those Syrians going home were internally displaced people. After that, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq followed respectively.
The typically pro-imperialist NPR attempted to suggest that the return of the internally displaced to their homes are being forced to relocate back home by the Syrian government. That claim, while largely nonsensical, is also contradicted by reports from other mainstream agencies.
IOM is worried that the “appropriate measures” to ensure safety to those Syrians returning home are not yet in place.
Of course, the real question that needs to be asked here is simple: “If Assad is killing his own people, why are Syrians running back to him in droves?” After all, when African refugees were being labeled Syrian two years ago, we were told that these people were fleeing the “brutal Assad,” the dictator “killing his own people.” So why would people who were being slaughtered by their own government rush back to it at the earliest possible opportunity?
Perhaps because they actually prefer to live in Syria than some other country. Perhaps their government isn’t killing them like Americans are being told they are.
It is also important to point out that the rate of return for Syrian refugees has increased directly with the amount of territory liberated by the Syrian government. In other words, as the Syrian government liberates more territory, more Syrians return to their homes in government-controlled territory. Obviously, if Syrian refugees were fleeing Assad, we would be seeing an increase in refugees.
Regardless, it is clear to all who are not being paid to see otherwise that Syrians are returning home because America’s terrorists are losing territory and, thus, they now have the ability to return to their homes under government control.
While alternative media researchers have been pointing this out since the beginning of the conflict, mainstream media now has no choice but to admit that Syrians are willingly returning to the country run by the man these same outlets have attempted to demonize and destroy for six years.
Slowly but surely, the mainstream media’s narrative surrounding Syria is unraveling in front of everyone’s eyes.

PayPal Endorses Islamic Jihad After ProPublica Hit Piece Against Anti-Jihad Websites

Yesterday, I published an email from Soros-funded ProPublica’s Lauren Kirchner, threatening to use the Southern Poverty Law Center’s spurious hate group listing to pressure various platforms to drop Jihad Watch.
Kirchner apparently was angered by having her fascism publicly exposed, since even though she sent her threatening letter to many people, today at 1:45PM, ProPublica published its hit piece, and it led off with me:
Because of its “extreme hostility toward Muslims,” the website Jihadwatch.org is considered an active hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.
The views of the site’s director, Robert Spencer, on Islam led the British Home Office to ban him from entering the country in 2013.
But its designation as a hate site hasn’t stopped tech companies — including PayPal, Amazon and Newsmax — from maintaining partnerships with Jihad Watch that help to sustain it financially.
PayPal facilitates donations to the site. Newsmax — the online news network run by President Donald Trump’s close friend Chris Ruddy — pays Jihad Watch in return for users clicking on its headlines.
Until recently, Amazon allowed Jihad Watch to participate in a program that promised a cut of any book sales that the site generated. All three companies have policies that say they don’t do business with hate groups.
Within hours, PayPal bowed to this defamation. At 6:02PM, I got this email from PayPal:

In reality, I oppose jihad mass murder. PayPal apparently thinks that makes me a “hatemonger.”
I oppose the murder of people who decide in conscience to leave Islam. PayPal thinks that makes me a “right-wing extremist.”
I oppose honor killings, female genital mutilation, scripturally-sanctioned wife-beating, etc.
PayPal thinks that means I am too hateful to use their service.

Roundup contains ingredient that can kill human cells

Weed killer Roundup contains ingredient that can kill human cells, say researchers

Email
Roundup-weed-killerRoundup has been a top-selling weed killer since its release in the 1970s. Numerous studies have connected its active ingredient, glyphosate, with a number of serious health problems – especially to the unborn child.  More recently, it’s been found that one of the so-called “inert” ingredients in Roundup could be making the effects of glyphosate much worse.
“Inert” ingredients refer to preservatives, surfactants, solvents and other substances that are added to herbicides and pesticides. About 4,000 different inert ingredients have been approved for addition to weed killer products like Roundup by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Editor’s note: The collusion between the biotech (chemical) industry and government agencies is far worse than you can imagine.  I strongly suggest you watch GMOs Revealed – a docuseries that exposes how corporate giants, like Monsanto, are knowingly poisoning our food and environment.  Educate yourself and discover a definite way to avoid being harmed.
For a limited time, GMOs Revealed is available for FREE viewing from Tue. Aug. 22 – Thu. Aug. 31, 2017.  Watch it now.

Not all so-called “inert” ingredients in Roundup are inert

Research conducted by a French team associated with the University of Caen shows that certain inert ingredients can have the effect of amplifying the toxicity of glyphosate on human cells. One specific inert ingredient, POEA (polyethoxylated tallowamine), was particularly deadly to human placental, umbilical cord and embryonic cells.
These findings indicates that the so-called inert ingredients in Roundup weed killer are far from inert. This effect occurred even at concentrations of the herbicide that were considerably more diluted than what is typically used. Even at residual levels on lawns, gardens and crops, these chemicals could be causing major cellular damage.

POEA in Roundup weed killer makes effects of glyphosate much worse

Researchers are concerned that exposure to Roundup weed killer could cause problems with pregnancies, hormones and fetal development. This could in turn lead to birth defects, low birth weights, miscarriages and other abnormalities.
Roundup’s manufacturer Monsanto contends that the study’s methods do not reflect realistic usage of their product. They maintain that Roundup is safe when used as directed. Yet, hundreds of studies have been done on Roundup – since the 1980s regarding the risks of glyphosate – and many indicate a higher cancer risk due to exposure.
The EPA does not believe glyphosate poses toxicity risks when it is used at the recommended doses. Also, the EPA and United States Department of Agriculture consider POEA a ‘harmless inert ingredient.’ However, the current study results indicate the need for these health agencies to reconsider their policies, especially when glyphosate and POEA are combined in the same product.

Ignored reality: Glyphosate in weed killer linked to cancer and birth defects

According to the EPA, Roundup is the most widely used weed killer in the U.S. Around 100 million pounds of it are applied to lawns and farms annually. This is despite many studies from around the world connecting glyphosate to birth defects and cancer.
Argentinian scientists and activists called for a ban on the herbicide after noticing higher incidents of these health issues near areas where the weed killer was sprayed. Argentina is one of the world’s biggest exporters of soy. Additionally, a 2014 meta-analysis found that exposure to weed killer doubled the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Most health studies about Roundup have been focused only on glyphosate rather than its other components. Clearly, more research is needed on the toxic cocktail of ingredients contained in this and similar weed killers. Lastly, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do more long-term studies (beyond the usual 90 day time period) – so, we could really see the results.
