Act or prepare to face street demo, MP tells IGP
KUALA LUMPUR: Stop dragging your feet or be prepared for another massive street demonstration, a DAP lawmaker has told the Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, speaking to reporters after lodging his “final” report against state investment fund 1MDB, hoped his complaint “would not be ignored” like his previous ones.
“No more police report on 1MDB from me because they (the police) will either take action, or they won’t,” he told reporters outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters here.
“I’m giving the Inspector-General of Police one week from today to take action against those implicated in the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) lawsuits.
“If no action is taken against them, Pakatan Harapan (PH), along with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will take drastic measures which include, but not limited to, a peaceful public demonstration.”
Lim lodged the report on behalf of PH’s component parties and several NGOs, including Otai Reformis, Persatuan Mahasiswa Malaysia, and the Malaysian Indian Voice.
In the report, Lim urged the police to investigate those named in the DoJ’s lawsuits filed in Los Angeles, which included Prime Minister Najib Razak’s stepson Riza Aziz, Penang-born business tycoon Low Taek Jho, and an unnamed individual referred to as “Malaysian Official 1.”
Khalid had said that police have completed “phase one” of 1MDB investigations and would initiate the second phase soon. This would include questioning Riza and Low, he had added.
Lim also told Khalid to stop “wasting taxpayers’ money” and call the duo back to Malaysia for questioning, instead of sending a police team overseas.
Former Bersih 2.0 chairperson, Ambiga Sreenevasan yesterday revealed that the electoral reform group is mulling organising a peaceful rally to demand for Najib’s resignation following the DoJ’s action to seize assets purchased with money allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.
This was supported by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad who urged the public to step up their game and exert more pressure on Najib and the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
Now a VOICE to press the hand of the IGP to act against those implicated by US DoJ. Kudos to Lim for this stand. Let us all rally next week against this outrageous plunder of M'sian taxpayers' money! The IGP and AG should resign if no action is taken. AG is even worse protecting Najib when the cards are shown, surely he is involved as he is the One who signs the cheque given to Jho Low and Riza!!! NOW order the arrest of Jho Low and Riza.
